Ziro Festival of Music 2026: Four Days of Music in the Paddy Fields of Arunachal Pradesh

There are music festivals with giant stages in big cities. And then there is Ziro, a festival where the stage is wooden, the ground is a paddy field, the backdrop is a pine covered Apatani valley, and the crowd dances barefoot until the mountains turn purple at dusk.
If you've been meaning to go, this is your year. The 13th edition of the Ziro Festival of Music runs from 24 to 27 September 2026 in Ziro Valley, Lower Subansiri district, Arunachal Pradesh — and it's shaping up to be one of the biggest yet.
What Makes Ziro Different
Ziro isn't just a concert. It's a slow immersion: you wake up in a tent with mist drifting over rice fields, walk past Apatani elders carrying bamboo baskets, eat smoked pork with rice beer, and then settle in for a lineup that swings from Naga folk-rock to Sri Lankan pop to Indian classical violin — all in a single evening.
The festival is eco-conscious by design, locally rooted, and deliberately small enough to feel human. You'll run into the artists at the food stalls. That's the charm.
The 2026 Lineup: 40+ Artists, 10+ Countries
More than 40 artists from India and abroad will perform this year, with musicians travelling from Algeria, Thailand, Palestine, Switzerland, South Africa, South Korea, Nepal, Ireland, the Philippines and Sri Lanka.
Headline and marquee acts:
- Parikrama — marking 35 years of Indian rock
- Midival Punditz — a much-anticipated return to the Ziro stage
- Yohani (Sri Lanka) — the voice behind "Manike Mage Hithe"
- Sukhbir, Sneha Khanwalkar, Shakthisree Gopalan, Shanka Tribe, Saltaire (Ireland), Isam Elias, Michael Dias, Owelle, Vedan, Kaali Duniya, Apoorva Krishna, Talahib (Philippines)
Northeast India represented by:
- Sukesh Suklabadya (Tripura) · Chingleipak Collective & Yelhomie (Manipur) · Tribal Rain (Sikkim) · Temsu Clover (Nagaland) · Mood Station (Mizoram) · NOVO (Assam) · David Angu (Arunachal Pradesh)
New this year: the India chapter of Circuit Mixers, an international artist residency connecting electronic musicians from South Africa, Switzerland and India.

How to Reach Ziro
By air: The nearest airport is Lilabari (Assam), about 4–5 hours by road. Many travellers instead fly into Guwahati (GAU) a genuinely scenic route through Assam's tea country into the Arunachal hills.
By rail: Naharlagun / Guwahati are the practical rail heads, with road transfers to Ziro.
By road: Ziro is a hill drive from Guwahati via Nagaon–Tezpur–North Lakhimpur or via Jorhat. Roads are beautiful but slow; plan for a full day.
Local travel: Shared sumos and hired cabs handle the Hapoli–festival-ground–Ziro–Biiri stretch. Distances are short but hilly.
One practical note: Indian travellers need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Arunachal Pradesh. Apply online in advance, and carry printed copies.
Where to Stay
- On-site camping — the classic Ziro experience, closest to the music
- Homestays in Hapoli and Ziro town — warm Apatani hospitality, home-cooked food
- Hotels and guesthouses — limited stock, highest demand, book earliest
5 Things Not to Miss Beyond the Music
- Apatani villages — Hong, Hari and Hija, with their distinctive bamboo architecture
- Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary — cloud forests, silver firs and rare orchids
- Meghna Cave Temple — a limestone cave shrine about 8 km from Ziro town
- The local food — pika pila, bamboo shoot dishes, smoked pork and apong (rice beer)
- Sunrise over the valley — set an alarm at least once. You'll understand why.

Final Word
Ziro is the kind of festival people describe badly on purpose, because they want to keep it for themselves. Four days, forty artists, one valley — and a memory that outlasts every playlist.
24–27 September 2026. See you in the paddy fields.
